An apprentice butcher who caught his hand in a mincing machine prompted a major operation at a Perth hospital yesterday as rescue workers and engineers worked to free his hand from the machine.

The 17-year-old was taken to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance - with his hand still in the machine.

The boy was in surgery last night as surgeons tried to save his hand.
