APPRENTICE butcher Jamie Butterly reckons any help the NSW Government offers him and his mates is a good thing.

The former Bulli High School student, now a first-year apprentice, said about 90 per cent of his friends went into a trade after they finished high school and found shopping for their tools and equipment was an expensive venture.

"Usually first-year apprentices don't get paid all that much so this will help them out buying equipment for their job."

Mr Butterly hopes to recoup some of the money he spent buying his butcher's knives, pouch, uniform and safety boots.

"It'll help me out a lot because it is all fairly expensive," he said.

But Mr Butterly said the initial outlay was worth it in the long run for school leavers considering entering a trade.
